What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the national service movement that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards and real world experience in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, health, and the environment. In 2006, Nevada AmeriCorps members provided 160,006 hours of services. The value of Nevada’s AmeriCorps members 160,006 hours of service amounts to $3,003,312.00 of service for the southern Nevada community. Members earned $380,348 in education awards and recruited 3,373 additional volunteers!

What is United Way of Southern Nevada's AmeriCorps Program?

The mission of the United Way of Southern Nevada’s AmeriCorps Program is to provide direct services for nonprofit agencies, build agency capacity and promote community collaboration. As a leader in the community, United Way understands the importance of providing support to agencies that serve vital needs in our community. Through highly motivated, talented AmeriCorps members, our agencies are better able to serve those in need of social services.

In August 2008, the UWSN AmeriCorps Program will place 20 half-time members at 13 nonprofit agencies throughout southern Nevada to learn new skills, gain career-building experience and serve our community. AmeriCorps members provide 900 hours of service in a calendar year (an average of 20 hours per week). AmeriCorps members work in programs for at-risk youth, disaster preparedness, community service, volunteer recruitment, the unemployed and working families.

The United Way of Southern Nevada AmeriCorps Program is made possible through a generous grant from Nevada Volunteers. The Program does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation or other non-merit factors. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
