Nearly 3,100 at-risk children to benefit during 28 elementary school stops

LAS VEGAS, NV, April 14, 2005—In conjunction with Kindergarten Round Up and in an effort to facilitate school enrollment, United Way of Southern Nevada’s (UWSN) Success By 6 and Clinic On Wheels (COW) will join efforts this afternoon to sponsor an immunization clinic at Dean Petersen Elementary School, 3650 Cambridge St., from 1 to 4 p.m. The immunizations will be provided at no cost to children in need.

Families with children enrolling in kindergarten for the 2005-2006 school year are encouraged to visit the school site, where youth will receive immunizations on a first-come, first-served basis inside the COW bus.

UWSN’s Success By 6 initiative has the goal that all children are ready to succeed when they enter school. COW, a UWSN partner agency, travels throughout Clark County in black and white buses-turned-mobile-health-clinics, providing free health care services to at-risk youth.

Dean Petersen Elementary School is just one of 28 stops on the community partners’ immunization clinic tour. Having already made a mark at three schools, the mobile clinic and Success By 6 will make tracks through Clark County, providing 24 additional immunization clinics through June 3. Immunization clinics are scheduled for other Cambridge area schools, including Ruby Thomas ES on May 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Lake ES on June 2 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

According to Jacque Matthews, Success By 6 chairwoman, nearly 3,100 at-risk children are expected to benefit from the immunization clinics.

“The partnership between Success By 6 and COW is an answer to our community’s needs. The immunizations will positively impact families, our community and area schools,” she said. “It’s imperative that we direct resources and work alongside a community partner like COW to ensure that children are ready to succeed when they enter school.”
