"Big Blue" Making A Difference

United Way of Southern Nevada’s partnership with Nevada Health Centers has created life-changing outcomes for at-risk youth in Southern Nevada. Last year, Nevada Health Centers opened their mobile healthcare unit, called the Nevada Children’s Health Project (NHCP). The NHCP, nicknamed “Big Blue,” serves refugees - one of the most vulnerable populations in southern Nevada – thanks to the support of United Way funding.

Each Wednesday, the NHCP team cares for refugees at a local apartment complex. The NHCP staff offer care and compassion and demonstrate care instructions through video translation and visual demonstrations on the mobile van, as many have never learned to read or write.

Recently, the mobile team made a difference in the life of a 24-month-old infant who had just arrived from the Congo one week prior. He had a viral throat and skin infection. Without acute care on the mobile unit, he would have needed hospital admission. The mobile team was able to coordinate care in partnership with Catholic Charities and provide the needed education and medications for him to recover by delivering medications immediately to him preventing a costly hospital admission.

UWSN is proud to partner with Nevada Health Centers to provide high impact and holistic healthcare to at-risk populations in our community. Your donations enable NHCP’s team to serve those most in need in Southern Nevada and help their patients live healthier and happier lives.
